You never know how much a tiny act of kindness will mean to someone. It fundamentally altered Granpruno the cat.
A Montreal couple started putting out food for stray cats in their area last summer. They quickly became aware of a grumpy-appearing tabby who appeared particularly eager for food. They called him “Granpruno” because he resembled one of their kittens, Pruno.
Granpruno returned to the couple’s yard for daily visits, but he was so loving and social that they assumed he had a home and a family somewhere.
“This big cat was looking for caresses and he was happy to have attention. He came as soon as they called him,” Chatons Orphelins Montréal, a Montreal-based animal rescue, wrote on Facebook. “He was nice and sociable; his hair was beautiful [and] he looked normal.”
The couple became concerned when Granpruno unexpectedly failed to appear one day. They hoped he was fine and with his family, but they kept food out and kept an eye on their yard in case he returned.
They found Granpruno in their trash can a few weeks later as they were taking out the trash. They scarcely recognized the cute cat anymore because of his radical transformation.
He was “flesh and bones” and didn’t appear to be in good health, according to Chatons Orphelins Montréal. “When he approached them, they immediately gave him hugs. He did not speak as he allowed himself to be taken along with them.
The couple, who volunteer with Chatons Orphelins Montréal, realized he needed immediate veterinary attention and took him to the rescue for help. Test results revealed that Granpruno was suffering from hyperthyroidism, which made it difficult for him to keep food down.
But once the 9-year-old cat started medication, he reverted to his happy, healthy self.
“He’s the cream of the crop and he gets along well with the other cats in the house,” Chatons Orphelins Montréal wrote on Facebook. “He likes to talk or to have cuddles [and] still likes to have fun. If you have feathers or games with catnip, he becomes a cat that rolls on his back and rubs himself with pleasure. He runs after feathers and he has fun like a baby.”
Orphelins Chatons Granpruno’s foster parents were concerned that finding a home for a senior cat with health difficulties could be challenging, but they fell in love with the gregarious cat right away and chose to take him in permanently.
Granpruno is now at last safe and enjoying a comfortable life with a family who loves him. And he is keeping an eye on his followers.
