In North America, it’s usual to see stray and feral cats roaming the streets. In Canada today, it is believed that there are between 1.2 and 4 million cats living on the streets. Stories of these cats being saved and finding their permanent homes are especially inspiring because of this.
Fortunately, she received some helpful assistance, and the path to her health and happiness started to take shape.
The people who found Oreo took her home and helped her give birth to five, healthy kittens. Then they reached out to Karly and Katelyn Saltarski, the cofounders of Salty Animal Rescue, in order to get mother and babies the best possible chance at finding new homes.
Karly and Katelyn posted on Salty Animal Rescue’s Instagram about Oreo and her brood, stating, “Life still isn’t easy on us right now, but after receiving a message about a Dundas stray having given birth on the year anniversary of our mom’s passing, I knew I couldn’t say no.”
They asked their followers to help name the kittens as they worked on getting them to grow up big and strong.
After two weeks in foster care, the kittens had their eyes open as well as brand new names. It was decided that they should have a December theme, so they were all given holiday names.
Tinsel was named for her gray and white fur, the mini me of the black-and-white Oreo got the name Juniper, and one of the calicos was called Noel.
The other calico got the name Clara after the lead character in The Nutcracker. Finally, the only boy of the group was dubbed Griswold after the name of the family in National Lampoon’s.
The kittens learned to wrestle with one another and chase their mother’s tail as the days went on, and they also got really good at posing for Instagram photos. They continued to grow swiftly and learnt how to utilize their litter boxes.
When it came to offering her foster parents love, Oreo transformed into the sweetest person ever. Her foster father Chris seemed to be her favorite, and she loved to “bunt” him, which is when a cat pushes and rubs against a person to leave a scent imprint and to express affection.
She improved in her ability to speak up for herself as her kittens grew bigger, asking for rewards on a daily basis and expressing her want for affection from her guardians. She even grew close with Nood, the family dog.
Oreo and her five babies were finally adopted by their permanent home after spending nearly two months in foster care. It’s gratifying to know that a tale that began in the most depressing and bleak of circumstances was able to come to a happy conclusion because of the kind hearts of countless people who were prepared to open their homes to this lovely family.
