Erin Breean first observed the weird cat while walking her dog in Austin, Texas, with her boyfriend.
“It’s hot here,” Breean said to The Dodo, “so we walk our dog very late at night – it was midnight.” “We’re about two blocks from our house, and there’s this cat lounging at the end of a driveway.” We’re quite familiar with all the area cats because we walk our dog all the time, but I’d never seen this cat.”
The cat seemed friendly and well-fed, so Breean figured he belonged to someone but was maybe lost.
“He came right up to us, and he was rubbing all over our ankles,” Breean said. “But when my dog came over to see him, [the cat] tried to attack him and chase him down the street a little bit. So we separated them, and my boyfriend took our dog home.”
For a few minutes, Breean stayed outdoors with the cat to shoot shots. She wanted to share them on the Austin Lost and Found Pets Facebook page in case he was still missing.
“The cat sat with me the entire time, rubbing on me and turning onto his tummy for belly rubs, and he was just very nice,” Breean added.
When Breean tried to go home, the cat — whom she started calling Greg — followed her.
“I was like, ‘Hey man, don’t follow me home if you live down the street or wherever your house is,’” Breean said.
Greg, on the other hand, showed no indications of departing. In reality, he set up shop in front of Breean’s house and peered at her through the window as she entered. Breean set out some food and drink for him, concerned that he might be hungry, and this appeared to encourage him even more.
“He sat for nearly an hour beside that small window,” Breean said. “Eventually, I realized that I just had to ignore him or he wouldn’t return to his house, or wherever he came from.”
Breean and her boyfriend assumed Greg had returned home when he vanished from the front window. But they were mistaken once more.
“I walked into the kitchen and fixed myself a snack,” Breean explained, “but when I sat back on the sofa, I was utterly frightened when I observed someone gazing in on me.”
Greg was now staring at them through a window at the back of the house.
“He was just sitting out there, watching us on the couch watching TV,” Breean said. “He sat out there and yelled for nearly an hour. He tried to get in through the dog door, and then he curled up … and went to sleep.”
Greg returned the next morning, and he stayed for the whole of the day. He also accompanied Breean and her partner on their evening stroll with Murphy, their dog.
“We walk our dog for approximately a mile, and he would accompany us the entire time, trying to chase our dog,” Breean said.
He wouldn’t let Breean out of his sight — for four days.
He continued staring through the windows the whole time.
“He [Navarrete] was very happy to see him,” Breean said. “He wept for five minutes.”
Breean is happy Kylo is back at his rightful home, although she and her boyfriend miss him in a strange way.
“My partner commented the other day, ‘I wonder what Greg’s doing,’” Breean said. “And I responded, ‘Man, me too,’” says the narrator.
Breean shared the anecdote on Catspotting, a secret Facebook community for cat enthusiasts while reminiscing about the Greg days, and it quickly went viral.
“Whether it was to move in with us, phone his father, or murder my dog, he was desperate to get into the home,” Breean added. “I’m not sure which is which.” He was, nonetheless, a tenacious individual.”
