For a long, a stray cat wandered about an auto shop in downtown Los Angeles. Workers were also astonished to find young kittens inside one of the store’s tires a few weeks ago.
The cat-mother refused to let anybody near her offspring and continued to look for them until she vanished without a trace one day.
After several days of not seeing the cat, the staff got concerned and took action.
One of the store’s customers, Maggie, works at a veterinary clinic. It was she who was called first, since the kittens clearly needed help urgently.
Maggie arrived immediately, while the other rescuers, meanwhile, were looking for an experienced overexposure volunteer.
In a word, the kittens were in good hands, and the entire auto shop personnel exhaled a sigh of relief.
Wrenn Rescues volunteer Ashley Kelly was in charge of the overexposure. “The kittens were in horrible shape. “To remain warm, Maggie had to slip one of them under her T-shirt,” Ashley explains.
She carried the kittens home that evening, washed the black tire tracks off their faces, and started feeding them through a tube since they were too weak to eat themselves.
The kittens endured 2-3 days without sustenance before being rescued. “On their first night (in foster care), I fed them little meals every two hours to minimize stomach upset.”
It was not easy, but it was worth it – the kittens perked up and almost immediately put on weight.
Two of them were especially frail (about 190 g at the age of 2.5 weeks), and therefore they recovered a few days later than the others.
Ashley was awoken on the third morning of her stay by the voices of six hungry children wanting food.
“They were severely underweight when they arrived with us,” says Alyssa Smith, co-founder of Wrenn Rescues. “Most likely they wouldn’t have much time left without their mother and outside intervention.”
“Feeding six kittens with a pacifier is a difficult task. Volunteers are indeed lifesavers.”
That shop never saw the mother cat again. Workers believe she would not have survived on the streets.
Her kittens, on the other hand, were rescued by the entire globe. They are now flourishing under the care of guardians.
The kittens (all boys) virtually doubled their weight in a week.
They are fit, joyful, and eager to learn.
