Mateja was driving home from work a few months ago when she came upon an abandoned cat near a busy junction.
“I was cycling along my normal path.” As I reached the junction, I spotted a small fluffy and realized it was a starved kitten,” Mateja said.
The woman dismounted her two-wheeler and approached the cat, intending to push him off the road. The scruffy little hobo spotted her from distance and dashed over to meet her as if he was already prepared to receive help.
Mateja carefully placed the kitten in her backpack to transport it safe and sound. The striped baby was completely emaciated, the bones were sticking out, but from joy and relief, he slept all the way to the house.
“He slept on the bundles of clothes in my backpack. Judging by his bad appearance when we met, he had not slept properly for a long time, and now, finally, he realized that he could relax, and indulged in rest for most of that day.
Mateja brought the kitten to the clinic, where it was discovered that he was very malnourished: the kitten was half his normal size for his age.
“His adorable huge ears reminded me of Gremlins’ Gizmo.” Mateja explains, “That’s where his name comes from.”
“It was fate that brought us together. That day, I worked a little later than normal. I probably would not have met him if I had gone on time.”
Gizmo quickly felt at ease in the company of a new family. Making up for the missed sleep, he ate heartily and lay down on his own blanket, putting his head on a teddy bear.
“Gizmo gradually recovered after significant veterinary treatment, and now he is the most lively kitten that follows me around all day,” Mateja explains.
He met Sarah, a red-striped cat who is ten years his senior.
Gizmo made incredible development over the next few weeks, not only totally healed but also completely rounded-fluffed from head to tail.
He became fully tame and affectionate, and he assumed the position of house auditor, looking after his humans and begging for treats along the way.
Gizmo adores his humans, showers them with unending affection, and never fails to put a smile on their faces.
“He welcomes me joyfully bending his head and plopping down on his back so I can scratch his hairy tummy every morning when I get up and every day when I get in after work – what could be cuter?” Mateja says.
“He loves nose kisses, stomach rubs, and loves to hop on my back like a backpack – I guess he remembers our trip that first day.”
Gizmo enjoys an assortment of blankets and pillows and always uses them to nap in comfort.
Since the day he was rescued at the crossroads, the tabby cat has come a long way. He is no longer the scared little kid, but a developed and attractive young man.
“Gizmo has provided me a lot of happiness, and I’m glad I can repay him with my love.”
