Britta Bergeson, 8, knew she wanted the cat as soon as she saw the picture.
Justice, a one-year-old cat, was found as a stray at the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) last month.
“Our field staff went out and took her up when someone noticed her,” Vanessa Crues, AHS adoptions supervisor, told The Dodo. “She had damage to both of her eyes when she came to us.”
Justice’s eyes were so bad, both of them were removed, leaving her completely blind. But this did nothing to deter Britta’s desire for adopting her.
“She originally saw her on the [AHS] website, and she was telling her whole family about her, and how that was the cat she wanted,” Crues said. “She had a soft spot in her heart for this cat.”
To help convince her parents to allow her to adopt Justice, Britta drew pictures – one image showed Justice purring in Britta’s arms; another showed Britta rubbing noses with Justice while saying, “I love you.”
Crues remarked, “Her parents said she couldn’t stop talking about her.” “When she saw [Justice] and realized she needed additional love and care, I believe she wanted to provide it to her. ‘I can take excellent care of her, give her a wonderful home, and cradle her,’ she reasoned.”
Britta only wanted to meet one cat when she finally went to the shelter two weeks ago: Justice.
Crues said, “It was basically an immediate love connection.” “She became rather emotional, and she was sobbing happy tears, as if to say, ‘Oh my god, she’s everything I expected.’”
Justice cuddled up to Britta after the shelter employee placed him on her lap.
“Cats might be a little wary around people,” Crues explained, “but she simply warmed up right away.” “She let her pet her and was rolling around, soaking up all the attention. It was a good decision.”
Britta took Justice home that same day, and renamed her Lucky – for the best reason.
“We were in the car headed home and she mentioned renaming her Lucky,” Shay Bergeson, Britta’s mom, told The Dodo. “Then she said, ‘We are lucky to have her and she is lucky to have us!’”
Lucky is fast adjusting into her new home, and Britta is overjoyed to have her in her life.
“She’s doing a lot better than I expected,” Shay remarked. “She sat in Britta’s room on her cat bed for the first two days, but by the third day, she was venturing out since she knew the place so well! She is the sweetest, most loving cat we’ve ever had.”
“Lucky loves to follow us around the house and especially loves being around our feet as we do our normal morning routines,” Shay said. “She jumps up on the couches to be with us, and sometimes we will even find her on our beds just chilling. She will play with toys or anything small on the ground. She even will pick up Britta’s socks and truck them around house.”
Crues and the other staff at the shelter are overjoyed that Lucky found the perfect home.
“[Lucky] has a loving family, with a grandfather, aunts and uncles who are all committed in making sure she has the simplest transition into her new home,” Crues added. “And that is our objective for every animal that walks through our door,” she says.
If you’re looking to adopt a dog or cat, the Arizona Humane Society has a lot of animals looking for homes. Making a donation is another way to help. Lucky may also be followed on Instagram.
