Kara Yancey was working in her office when A frantic woman knocked on the door, begging for help, she was holding three kittens wrapped in blankets. ”
Though the rescue wasn’t open, Kara and another coworker, Jon, leaped into action, doing all they could to keep them alive.
Smothered in fleas, the little pests were quickly removed, then their wounds were treated. Cold to the touch, the little ones were then placed in an incubator, and Kara took them home for round-the-clock feeding.
Sadly, despite Kara’s best efforts, two of the kittens died. Though Mendel, the single survivor, began to show signs of life, he fought tooth and nail to stay alive.
“He was eating well, gaining weight, and becoming a very talkative little boy after some antibiotics, multiple baths, probiotics, and TLC,” Kara added.
“Every few hours, my alarm would go off, and I’d look over to see his curious tiny face peering at me through the incubator glass, as if to say, ‘Where’s my bottle?’”
Mendel was soon given a plush toy mother to keep him company, which he cuddled up to after his meals before falling asleep.
He was old enough and had healed enough to move into his own playpen before long. Where, following his people all over the home after healing from his leg injuries, he was more than confident on all four paws.
Mendel was well on his way to being a happy, healthy kitten, with his Siamese markings growing more evident. Across became running, leaping, and climbing on anything.
Then he was confident enough to meet the other kittens and learn how to cat.
“He was becoming such a great cat and you’d never guess he started out in such bad shape,” Kara shared.
“He loved drinking from his bottle, getting lots of cuddles from us, and playing with our other foster kittens.”
“He insisted on being held as close to your face as possible and would fall asleep with his cheek pressed to yours.”
Mendel is never short of something to say, and he expresses himself to each and every one.
His growth from a little kitten just clinging to life to the man he is now has been phenomenal.
“He grew into a lovely Siamese mix cat and was adopted by a nice couple after graduating from my foster care to the shelter’s big boy kitten area,” Kara said.
Most importantly, he enjoys his new home.
“Despite his difficult start in life, he grew into the kindest, most lovable, and happiest young boy.”
