When a very ill newborn kitten was discovered all alone, he was sent to the Atlanta Humane Society (AHS), and no one knew if he would live.
A foster parent for AHS rushed to the shelter to take the kitten in, but he seemed to need more than just human help.
So the concerned staff had an idea.
They introduced the kitten to Ember, a mother cat who had just returned with a litter of kittens. Her kittens, on the other hand, were so unwell that they died one by one.
“She had lost all of her offspring, but not her motherly instinct,” Christina Hill, AHS’s head of marketing and communications, told The Dodo.
When Ember encountered the little, ailing kitten, there was no doubt that he would be adored.
“They had an instant connection,” Hill added. “The bereaved mother instantly warmed to the small cat, grooming, cuddling, and nursing him.”
The kitten was named Flame. And his adoptive mother, Ember, probably saved his life.
The couple is currently in foster care. Within a month, they will both be available for adoption, either together or separately.
“It would be just perfect if they could be adopted together,” Hill said. “They’d adore it!” And two cats are usually preferable to one.”
