Erin Breean first observed the weird cat while walking her dog in Austin, Texas, with her boyfriend.
“It’s hot here,” Breean said to The Dodo, “so we walk our dog very late at night – it was midnight.” “We’re about two blocks from our house, and there’s this cat lounging at the end of a driveway.” We’re quite familiar with all the area cats because we walk our dog all the time, but I’d never seen this cat.”
Breean assumed the cat belonged to someone but was lost because he appeared sociable and well-fed.
“He walked up to us and started rubbing his hands all over our ankles,” Breean explained. “However, when my dog came over to visit him, [the cat] attempted to attack him and chased him down the street for a little distance.” As a result, we separated them, and my boyfriend returned home with our dog.”
For a few minutes, Breean stayed outdoors with the cat to shoot shots. She wanted to share pictures on the Austin Lost and Found Pets Facebook page in case he was still missing.
“The cat sat with me the entire time, rubbing on me and turning onto his tummy for belly rubs, and he was just very nice,” Breean added.
When Breean attempted to return home, the cat, whom she began to refer to as Greg, pursued her.
“I was like, ‘Hey dude, don’t follow me home if you live down the street,” Breean added.
Greg, on the other hand, showed no indications of departing. In reality, he set up shop in front of Breean’s house and peered at her through the window as she entered. Breean set out some food and drink for him, concerned that he might be hungry, and this appeared to encourage him even more.
“He sat for nearly an hour beside that small window,” Breean added. “Eventually, I realized that I just had to ignore him or he wouldn’t return to his house, or wherever he came from.”
Breean and her boyfriend assumed Greg had returned home when he vanished from the front window. But they were mistaken once more.
“I walked into the kitchen and fixed myself a snack,” Breean explained, “but when I sat back on the sofa, I was utterly frightened when I observed someone gazing in on me.”
Greg was now peering at them from a back-of-the-house window.
Breean explained, “He was simply sitting out there observing us on the sofa watching TV.” “For over an hour, he sat outside and shouted.” He attempted to enter via the dog door, then curled up… and fell asleep.”
Greg returned the next morning, and he stayed for the whole of the day. He also accompanied Breean and her partner on their evening stroll with Murphy, their dog.
“We walk our dog for approximately a mile, and he would accompany us the entire time, trying to chase our dog,” Breean explained.
For four days, he wouldn’t allow Breean out of his sight. He didn’t stop glancing out the windows the entire time.
“You are welcome to come down at any moment during the night… Breean explained, “and all you’d see were these blazing eyes.” “He’d sneak a peep through the slats.” It was both humorous and disturbing… and after a time, we started to expect him to show there and look for him. He was continuously keeping an eye on you.”
Breean, on the other hand, was attempting to determine where Greg belonged. She’d made many postings about him on social networking platforms, but no one had claimed him as their own. She’d also created him a paper collar and affixed a message to it in the hopes that he’d return home to his owner, who’d be notified of Greg’s whereabouts, but it didn’t work either.
She didn’t want to take Greg to the local shelter or vet since she knew it would be traumatic for him, especially since he appeared to be in good condition.
“My own cat [Max] is super friendly, and he’s been known to go into our neighbors’ houses, let himself in, and hang out with them,” Breean explained. “So I didn’t want to take him [Greg] to the humane society or the vet or anything [until I knew he needed help]… because I wouldn’t want someone taking Max somewhere.”
She was tempted to let Greg inside at times, but she knew it would be a horrible idea since he may assault Murphy again.
Fortunately, a volunteer from Austin Lost and Found Pets stopped by with a microchip scanner, and using the information on Greg’s chip, they were able to identify his owner.
“I got a text message from the owner around 9 or 10 o’clock one night,” Breean explained. “Hey, you have Kylo,” he said. ‘Is it the cat?’ I asked. ‘Yeah,’ he said. ‘Did you get him?’ ‘Yes, he’s here,’ I replied. ‘Right now, he’s sitting in my backyard,’” says the narrator.
Michael Navarrete, Kylo’s owner, resided in an apartment building a few blocks away, and Kylo had gotten out one night. That following night, Navarrete arrived to pick him up.
“He [Navarrete] was overjoyed to meet him,” stated Breean. “For five minutes, he cried.”
Breean is relieved that Kylo has returned to his proper home, yet she and her boyfriend miss him in an odd manner.
“My partner mentioned the other day, ‘I wonder what Greg’s doing,’” Breean explained. “And I responded, ‘Man, me too,’” says the narrator.
Breean shared the anecdote on Catspotting, a secret Facebook community for cat enthusiasts, while reminiscing about the Greg days, and it quickly went viral.
“Whether it was to move in with us, phone his father, or murder my dog, he was desperate to get into the home,” Breean added. “I’m not sure which is which.” He was, nonetheless, a tenacious individual.”
